GPX files, or GPS Exchange Format, is an XML type file in data form for use in GPS, usually for use in software.

It can be used to describe waypoints, tracks, and routes. The format is open and can be used without the need to pay license fees.

In this short tutorial, we will show the basics of the elements that make up a GPX file

What is a Track?

It is a succession of registered points that we have generated when taking a tour.

The GPS can be configured to record track points with the interval that we want based on time, distance or in automatic mode at the discretion of the GPS itself each time it detects a relevant change of course.

It is necessary to consider that each point on the track has 4 attributes that define it: latitude, longitude, height, and time.

Tracks are saved as files under an extension that depends on the GPS management program you use; In this case, we mean GPX.

What is a Waypoint?

There are special locations that it is convenient to highlight with their own name because they are points where there is a detour, a fountain, a house, some mushrooms, a fossil, etc.

You can voluntarily mark a waypoint at any time on the ground, which you can later download to the PC.

You should also consider that a waypoint is associated with the following attributes:

• Own name
• Icon.
• The 4 known position data, which we can edit or correct.
• Others

What is a route?

A route is an artificial and imaginary route that we compose from various waypoints.

Waypoints are like targets where you have to go, but the appropriate path to reach them is unknown.

These files are useful in orienteering races, rallies, etc.

In this case, the GPS indicates in which direction the next point on the route is and at what distance, but it also shows the most optimal route to reach. However, you can choose the preferred route for this purpose.

The routes will also be archived independently, with a specific extension, which as always depends on the management program used.

Apart from these previously mentioned elements, data of travel speed, pace, time of day, etc. can be added to the GPX files for sports purposes.
